In a decisive move to address traffic and parking issues in Jalandhar, Commissioner of Police Swapan Sharma has announced a new requirement: obtaining a police no-objection certificate (NOC) will be mandatory for opening new malls, offices, or commercial establishments. This initiative is part of the broader’ crackdown on traffic woes’ plan to ensure adequate parking and ease congestion in the city.

Commissioner Sharma emphasised the importance of this new regulation, stating, “The Commissionerate Police is introducing reforms to address the city’s persistent traffic congestion. This measure will ensure that new commercial and office spaces provide sufficient parking, alleviating the burden on the public.”

Under the new rule, all new building constructions must secure an NOC from the police, confirming the provision of adequate parking spaces. This requirement extends to various establishments, including restaurants, bars, hotels, theatres, and hospitals. Applicants must submit detailed layouts and site plans indicating the dedicated parking areas, including the total number of parking slots for both four and two. The application must also detail seating capacity and the number of rooms or beds for venues like restaurants and hotels.

A letter outlining the specifics of the building construction approvals and the new NOC requirements has been issued to relevant departments. Sharma pointed out that this initiative would streamline vehicular movement and prevent congestion caused by insufficient parking facilities. “These measures will contribute to creating cleaner and safer roads in Jalandhar,” he asserted.

By enforcing this rule, the police aim to improve the overall traffic situation in the city, ensuring smoother vehicular movement and reducing the inconvenience caused by inadequate parking. This proactive approach is expected to significantly enhance the quality of life for Jalandhar’s residents and visitors.
