PINCODE, an innovative shipping container workspace in Ahmedabad, combines industrial design with sustainability. Designed by Salt Studio, it offers energy efficiency, flexibility, and a seamless blend of architecture and nature.
Ahmedabad, India – A new benchmark in workspace innovation has emerged, blending sustainability, functionality, and aesthetics. Designed by Salt Studio, the “PINCODE” project transforms a sprawling 9,848 sq. ft. plot into a striking modern office built from repurposed shipping containers. This ingenious workspace emphasises practicality and energy efficiency and redefines industrial design with contemporary elegance.
The office was crafted to meet a client’s vision for a flexible and distinctive environment that champions modern design sensibilities while prioritising sustainability. The result? A workspace that combines the rugged charm of industrial materials with the thoughtful precision of modern architecture.
Efficiency Meets Elegance
This project’s heart is its commitment to energy efficiency and functionality. The shipping containers are strategically aligned with the sun path to optimise natural lighting and minimise energy consumption. “The orientation and integration of acoustic sheets and insulation ensure not only comfort but also excellent thermal and soundproofing properties,” lead designer Kripa Ramani explains.
The façade, a standout feature, is crafted from triangular corrugated sheets, offering a visually arresting alternative to conventional metal structural columns. Large dual-faced windows flood the interiors with natural light, fostering a seamless connection between the workspace and its surroundings. High ceilings accommodate bespoke hanging light fixtures, enhancing the space’s aesthetic and functional appeal.
A Contemporary Interior with a Versatile Edge
The workspace prioritises flexibility and dynamism inside. Portable furniture, vibrant red natural stone tabletops, and white walls create a lively yet balanced environment. “The interplay of bold red finishes with minimalist white walls creates an energetic atmosphere while maintaining a sense of openness,” shares Ar. Anish Ramani.
Every cabin is thoughtfully curated, with artwork that reflects its purpose, enriching the user experience. The sleek metal framework of tables, combined with customised lighting fixtures, adds durability without compromising on style.
Harmonizing Architecture with Nature
The surrounding landscape is an equally integral part of the design. Elevated mounds lift the containers above road level, creating a distinct visual hierarchy. A pergola provides shade, while a black Kadapa stone pathway with flowering plants enhances functionality and ambience. “The pathway offers a raw aesthetic and effective drainage, all while inviting users into a sensory experience,” notes the design team.
Customised bollards and pole lights illuminate the area, ensuring the workspace remains welcoming and functional after sunset. This harmonious blend of architecture and nature elevates the project from a mere office to a thoughtfully designed ecosystem.
Setting a New Standard in Workspace Design
PINCODE demonstrates how industrial design can be both functional and beautiful. By incorporating sustainability into every aspect—from material selection to energy efficiency—Salt Studio has created a workspace that is not only forward-thinking but also grounded in practicality.
Smit Mehta’s photography captures the essence of this innovative project, showcasing how bold design can coexist with natural elements. As workspaces evolve, this shipping container office sets a high bar for creativity, adaptability, and sustainability in the coworking and flexible office industry.
Salt Studio’s achievement highlights the potential of architecture to transform ordinary materials into extraordinary spaces, redefining modern work environments.
