WeWork India is expanding in Chennai and is planning a new space in DLF Cybercity, Porur, by next year. With a Rs 300 crore annual investment, it aims to add two million sq. ft. annually. Chennai’s rising office space demand, driven by tech and flexible workspace needs, fuels WeWork’s strategic growth in the city.
WeWork India is set to expand its footprint in Chennai, exploring three to five new locations as demand for flexible office spaces grows. After opening a facility in Olympia Cyberspace, Guindy, the company plans a new DLF Cybercity, Porur Centre, by December next year.
“We plan to spend Rs 300 crore annually in capital expenditure, adding two million sq. ft of office space each year for the next four years across seven cities,” said Karan Virwani, CEO of WeWork India. In Chennai alone, the company operates across 1,30,000 sq. ft, offering 2,000 seats across two floors.
The decision to expand comes as Chennai’s office space market shows strong growth. In the first quarter of this year, the city recorded 1.8 million sq. ft of office space absorption, driven by demand from flexible space operators, banking and financial services, and technology firms. “Chennai has emerged as a thriving business landscape among freelancers, entrepreneurs, enterprises, and Global Capability Centres,” Virwani noted.
A shift in workspace preferences post-COVID-19 has further fueled demand for coworking solutions. “There is strong demand from various industries, including agri-tech, manufacturing, IT/ITES, and HR. With the opening of Olympia Cyberspace, WeWork India aims to provide innovative and collaborative work environments to meet the rising demand for flexible workspace solutions,” he added.
As more businesses embrace hybrid and flexible work models, coworking spaces are integral to India’s evolving office landscape. With its latest expansion in Chennai, WeWork India is positioning itself to cater to this dynamic and growing market.
