Why Bengaluru’s Workspaces Are Turning to Plant Rentals for a Greener, Smarter Office

Bengaluru’s offices are embracing plant rentals as a smarter, cost-effective solution to keep workspaces green. Offering regular upkeep, replacements, and decor alignment, plant rental firms are seeing rising demand from corporations and restaurants. As awareness of well-being and aesthetics grows, plant rentals are becoming integral to modern office design.

Plant Rentals Take Root in Bengaluru’s Office Culture

In Bengaluru’s evolving workspace ecosystem, indoor plants are quietly becoming a core part of office design—and increasingly, they’re rented, not bought. From corporate offices and Global Capability Centres to restaurants and coworking spaces, companies are turning to long-term plant rentals to keep their offices green without the hassle of maintenance or the unpredictability of plant care.

Unlike one-time purchases, plant rental contracts—typically spanning 1 to 2 years—provide end-to-end maintenance. This includes everything from leaf cleaning and fertilising to pest control, plant rotation, and even aesthetic refreshes to match interior design updates. “Companies prefer fixed budgets and transparent costs. They don’t like surprises,” says Ranganath, founder of Doorplants Services, which serves 25 corporate clients. “Rentals ensure plant longevity through regular monitoring, maintenance, and replacement.”

The economics also make sense. Parthasarathy of Terrassic notes, “Buying 200 plants might cost you ₹30,000 upfront. But a rental, at ₹8,000–10,000 per month, eliminates the need for an in-house horticulture team. It’s about convenience, not just greenery.” His clients rent between 200 and 500 plants, a scale that would otherwise demand significant upkeep.

Most clients opting for rentals are mid-to-large companies rather than startups, as greening initiatives often fall low on early-stage budget priorities. But once integrated, they’re rarely short-term. Sakthi Venkat of The Green Yard says nine out of ten clients choose rentals, often continuing for over four years—unless the company downsizes, relocates, or shifts to coworking.

Rentals also offer operational flexibility that ownership can’t. Disposal responsibilities, logistics, and replanting are handled entirely by the vendor. And as interest in biophilic design and wellness grows, businesses are becoming more discerning. “You can’t place spreading plants near seating or sun-loving varieties in dark corners,” explains Myna Batavia of Green Carpet – The Garden Centre. “Even the shape of planters matters for corridors with heavy footfall.”

The options have diversified, too. Dracaenas, philodendrons, ZZ plants, snake plants, fiddle-leaf figs, brassia varieties, and areca palms are all in demand. Sundari Ishwar, associated with The Association of People with Disability (APD), which also runs a plant rental program, notes a rise in sun-loving and flowering plants thanks to modern office architecture that allows more natural light indoors.

Beyond aesthetics, the psychological impact is clear. Healthy plants, well-maintained, sustained interest and even boosted morale. “When plants thrive, people notice and care. When they droop or die, they stop noticing them altogether,” says Myna. Ranganath agrees, adding that consistent maintenance often encourages clients to scale up their plant plans.

Still, plant rentals aren’t a fit for everyone. Offices with internal gardening teams or those seeking hyper-customised planters may find limitations. Yet for many of Bengaluru’s high-growth companies seeking low-effort, high-impact workplace upgrades, plant rentals are becoming an essential part of creating productive, welcoming, and sustainable office environments.
